Abstract

|
Transient synovitis is a common hip disorder of childhood characterized by the acute onset of painful limp and gradual resolution over several days without serious recurrence or sequelae.
Recently ultrasonographic examination gained acceptance as a valuable technique in diagnosis of treansient synovitis of the hip in children.
@ES The authors examined 20 cases of transient synovitis by ultrasonography from January 1991 to December 1991 and earned following results:
@EN 1) The mean age was 7 years with male predominence(M : F=4 : 1).
2) Simple X-Ray showed soft tissue shadow change in 40%(8/20) and the capular sign was the commonest among them(7/8).
3) the bone-to-capsule distance in sagittal ultrasonographic section was measured and revealed abnormally increased effusion in 50% of the patients with criteria of 1.5mm difference.
4) Ultrasonography can be a useful noninvasive method for detection and follow-up of joint offusion in transient synovitis of the hip in children.
